Michiko Sotobayashi

Starting her training in calligraphy at the age of eight, the influence of calligraphy is quintessentially rooted in the core of Sotobayashi’s. Known as one of the very few Japanese artists who exploit rare, and precious natural pigments from China, the artist is adept in wielding a deft movement of the brush and dispersing her colored ‘dots’ of islands emerging on the clean, white background.

Continued Dots

Since the Millennium, Sotobayashi has been extensively invited to exhibit solo shows in Japan and in New York. An innovative artist, Sotobayashi is also highly respected in the traditional calligraphy circles in Japan for her intellectual inputs to certain elite organizations, such as the Mainichi Shodo Association.
